The NBA has been seized by one high-profile gambling scandal after another, with Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier among those facing serious consequences over their gambling behavior.
Malik Beasley Without a Basketball Team – No More
Now, Malik Beasley says that he has enough. The NBA free agent has been unable to find a new team as he has not been cleared by the league that he had done nothing wrong.
Beasley is investigated over potential gambling offenses that he committed during the 2023-24 season, but the league has mustered thin evidence so far, stopping short of clearing his name.
As Beasley has been idling around with nothing to look forward to, he has decided to change things up, signing up with Bad Bunny’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) league team – Santurce Crabbers.
Beasley trusts that he will be able to retain his competitive form while he awaits his return to the NBA, which he is confident will happen sooner rather than later, pending the ongoing investigation.
In the meantime, the BSN will have to provide Maelik with his playground to stay sharp. It is the highest-tier basketball competition in Puerto Rico, and Maelik’s new team is owned by the Grammy Award-winning artist, allowing him to shine.
Beasley Has Been Cleared in Federal Probe, NBA Next
Yet, Beasley is not yet out of the woods, as he is under investigation as part of a gambling probe into NBA games. He was targeted by the US District Attorney’s office, specifically for games tied to his time with the Milwaukee Bucks. Beasley then went on to play for the Detroit Pistons, but his one-year contract was never renewed as the team caught wind of the ongoing federal investigation.
Prosecutors came up short, however, with Besaley’s lawyers confirming that he had been cleared in the federal probe. This has not stopped the NBA from pursuing a separate investigation of its own, with the league growing wary over gambling-related offenses perpetuated by its insiders.
Yet, the league is hardly the only top-tier competition in the United States to have come under similarly serious allegations. Major League Baseball players Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz are similarly charged with gambling offenses, but have so far maintained their innocence.
